WAD: “The predicted end of the world in 2012, the apocalyps, torrential rains, whatever: Femke has thought of everything and is prepared for whatever this summer’s weather has to throw at us. We’ll survive! And the ladies won’t be left in the cold, as Femke has created coloured pieces especially for them with integrated gas masks, waterproof shorts and a backpack that turns into a boat in a snap (instruction video available on her website). We love the idea. Dutch in origin, the designer has a sense of humour and a creative process combining art and fashion. A 2006 graduate of the Utrecht School of the Art and Design, we first noted her in 2010 with the first session of her theme ‘Totem’, which she further evolved the next year, this time exhibiting the work at the MOOOI Gallery in Amsterdam. A mix of graphic pieces that are entirely wearable sit comfortably amongst massive sculptural forms, surrounded by coloured, mounted pieces. And, her 2012 collection humorously pushes the limits, placing Femke in the category of designers who are shaking things up. Let’s hope taht the Mayans were right, at least so we can try out the hardware.”

When thinking about spring/summer 2012, Femke Agema couldn’t get past the doomsday predictions of the Mayans that the world would end in the year 2012. Come hell or high water, all the talk of apocalyptic destruction of the world inspired Femke to create Drijf, a water themed end-of-the-world collection. Having a rather positive take on this catastrophic event, Femke doesn’t give rise to doom and gloom, instead she plays up her signature aesthetic that is colorful and lighthearted.
